Can Islam be French? Does the religion pose a threat to longstanding French traditions of secularism and free speech? Has France failed to integrate the offspring of earlier generations of Muslim immigrants? Is the French nation still paying for the sins of past colonial conquests in the Arab world and elsewhere?

In this course, we will explore these questions and their implications through movies, literature, history and contemporary social debates. Students will develop a critical vocabulary allowing them to contextualize current debates around immigration, the European Union, and the global fight against terrorism

This course fulfills the Global Perspective diversity requirement.
All discussions and readings are in English and there are no pre-requisites.
